Zobrius Pharma has launched a new nutritional supplement, with the name Maxx-calzium, that provides an organic natural calcium alternative to the inorganic limestone calcium that is typical part of nutritional supplements. Eggshell calcium from Norilia is the main ingredient of this new product, with addition of both vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 – vitamins that can support calcium uptake in the body.

Calcium is an important mineral for the skeleton and the teeth. A lack of calcium in the bones, or low bone mineral density, leads to a condition called osteoporosis, which increases the risk of bone fractures. Particular sensitive areas are the hips, arms and back. In Norway, it is estimated that 5% of the population suffers from osteoporosis [1], with a higher prevalence in women.
While osteoporosis risk is correlated with increased age, there is a role for the diet as well. Calcium, vitamin D and K contribute to the maintenance of normal bones [2] – calcium is an ingredient of bone, and vitamin D and K support calcium uptake and utilization in the bone. Eggshell calcium may have an advantage over inorganic calcium with regards to bioavailability [3] – a potential benefit that will be further explored in clinical trials in the coming years.
Maxx-calzium is currently available only in selected stores in Norway, with a plan to launch internationally in the future. It consists of small, easy-to-swallow capsules, making it suitable for adults of all ages. The product contains Norwegian eggshell calcium from Norilia, from eggs processed at Nortura Revetal, that has been milled, sterilized and GMP approved.
